This month, a group of men spotted the couple riding together in a car, yanked them into the road and began to interrogate the boy and girl. Why were they together? What right had they? An angry crowd of 300 surged around them, calling them adulterers and demanding that they be stoned to death or hanged.
When security forces swooped in and rescued the couple, the mob’s anger exploded. They overwhelmed the local police, set fire to cars and stormed a police station six miles from the center of Herat, raising questions about the strength of law in a corner of western Afghanistan and in one of the first cities that has made the formal transition to Afghan-led security.
The riot, which lasted for hours, ended with one man dead, a police station charred and the two teenagers, Halima Mohammedi and her boyfriend, Rafi Mohammed, confined to juvenile prison. Officially, their fates lie in the hands of an unsteady legal system. But they face harsher judgments of family and community.

If they get out, their families will kill them anyway (if they're not killed while in confinement).
Like I've said many times before; there should never have been a single American boot on the ground in Afghanistan after September 11. We should have carpet bombed them for 6 months, kill a half million or a million of them, and then left a note advising them that if they harbored any more terrorists, we'd come back and kill the rest of them.
It's time for the American people to realize that war isn't about "nation-building", it's about vengeance. It's about destroying your enemy's ability to attack you anymore, not "winning hearts and minds". Let the UN mop up the mess after we're done making our point.
These people have no clue and if we stay 50 years, nothing's gonna change. Democracy comes from within and the Afghans don't have the will, nor do they even understand the concept. We certainly can't impose it on them with a puppet in Kabul and tons of cash. Loyalty there lasts as long as the money does and as soon as we leave, they're gonna go right back to what they've done for the last 1500 years. People have to want a democratic, civilized nation and the Afghans have proved, over and over again over the past decade, that they don't.
It's time to bring our people home now and let the Afghans kill each other, riot in the streets, and fuck their children and goats. We supposedly can't afford to take care of our senior citizens or our poor, yet we continue to dump money (by the billions) into that horrible place.
Fuck them.
Addendum:
And as far as Pakistan goes, it's time to bomb their nuclear arsenal into subatomic particles and cut them loose too. We can't afford it.

"You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it ..." -- William Tecumseh Sherman.
Who knew his shit, yo. And ended the American Civil War by burning a swathe through the economic heartland of the Confederacy until the remaining Confederate armies collapsed due to starvation and desertion (on paper Johnson's army opposing him in North Carolina had more soldiers than Sherman's army, but in reality all but 15,000 or so had deserted due to lack of food).
That is war. Not this namby-pamby "nation building" bullshit that pretends war can be something *other* than cruelty. Folks often talk about our success in building a new Japan and Germany after WW2, but ignore the fact that we utterly destroyed them. Crap, we even *nuked* the fucking Japanese! When we were done with them, the starving survivors living in the rubble of their once-proud nations had absolutely no desire to shoot any weapon in our direction, and if we had told'em to all walk in circles while reciting "God Bless America", they woulda done it just so we wouldn't start bouncing their rubble again. That's war. Not this "nation building" bullshit.
If we aren't there to bounce the rubble of folks who attacked us or declared war on us, we don't need to be there -- period. Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda are dead. DEAD. Mission accomplished. Bring the troops home.

Nothing could be finer than all those troops coming home now. Except that Adm McMullen is currently in Iraq trying like hell to get them to invite us to stay for another round. Hell, that war was over years ago and we haven't get them home yet.
