Why Republicans Have To Demagogue Democratic Presidents

By James, a Conservative who saw the light and chute-keeper at The Political Garbage Chute.

There’s a very noticeable and predictable tack that Republicans have been taking with Democratic presidents since Carter took office in 1977. Their playbook seems to consist of simply lying, distorting and outright decrying their leadership ability both while in office, and when they leave. It wasn’t just the peanut farmer from Georgia that got pilloried by right-wing flapping heads and politicians, President Clinton took a beating from those people as well.
...

The problem is that to conservatives, no liberal is worthy of the office. They see every liberal as an enemy combatant, and therefore the world’s most powerful liberal will most definitely bring about the final destruction of these United States of America. The problem for conservatives is that their narrative just doesn’t meet reality. Carter could be accurately put in the “liberal” box, at least on most issues. However, the truth is that Clinton and now Barack Obama have proven themselves to be center-right liberals, which is to say that philosophically they lean left but when it comes to actual governance, they drag themselves to the middle. It’s sound leadership, but it frightens the hardened ideologues of the right.
Funny, we see the wingnuts exactly the same way re "final destruction of the U.S. of A.", difference being WE'RE right.

The same kinds of attacks have been hurled at Obama for the last four years. He’s a Kenyan-Muslim-Socialist-Communist-George Soros Puppet-Antichrist, and he’s going to take all your guns away. They tried for four years to gin up enough latent racism and paranoia about the gays, blacks and youth bringing this country down to get him voted out last year. It didn’t work, just as it didn’t work in 1996 with Clinton. Now, we’re hearing eerily familiar rhetoric about impeachment over Sunday morning show talking points. No one was under oath on Meet the Press or Face the Nation. That doesn’t matter to the GOP though, they want that vile liberal Democrat out of office!

I keep coming back to why they do this. Why do Republicans demagogue every Democratic president? Why have they tried to discredit and even impeach the last two presidents (to be fair Obama’s impeachment is just a work in progress for them right now)? The answer is best given in three simple parts.

You can guess the first two, I bet.

Part III: George W. Bush

The Worst President of All Time. Since the memory of Nixon is fading for many — let’s face it, many of us in the generation coming into our own were born well after he left office — it’s really the specter of Dubya that will keep Republicans on their crusade to vilify every Democrat who enters the Oval Office from here to eternity. Yet, until a Democrat starts two unfunded wars, one of which was completely predicated on outright lies, no one will come close to challenging Bush for the belt. Until a Democrat cuts taxes so low that it hamstrings our political recovery after helping Wall Street decimate our economy, no one will challenge George for the title. Bush is a verifiable and permanent entrant in the Hall of Presidential Shame. And since he’s not the only Republican in there, that is truly what motivates the GOP hate machine — settling the score.

President Envy

So the bottom line is a really simple one. The Republicans have to do everything in their power to discredit and defame Democratic presidents because they are no longer the party of Lincoln. They are the party of Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes. They are the party of Trickle-Down, Iran Contra, and Watergate. They are the party that creates less jobs, less middle class wealth and less economic prosperity. They are the party whose presidents have been proven to be the most corrupt and/or inept. In other words, they wish Bill Clinton or President Obama had been Republicans, because at least they’d have a record of success to point to. Instead, all they have is their lies and made-up scandals, and the objectivity that history’s hindsight affords us disproves their rhetoric completely.

And that is why they can’t let go of their chew toys, no matter how much they need to for their own sakes.
One good thing about their bullshit of a lotta heat and almost no light is that they will soon be consigned to darkness. The sooner the better for all of us. Even them.
