More and more are coming into our town, it's getting a little later in the year, and the bird feeders are being raided pretty heavily.
Animal control officer told me that they're going after garbage and even pets. A lady has...well, had, a superanuated Basset hound (thing was 16 years old, pretty much blind, deaf, no teeth to speak of) and they were in the habit of just letting it out to relieve itself, it couldn't go far, and it...disappeared.
A neighbor kid said he saw a bear come out of the alley, just pick it up and run the six blocks back to the woods with the dog in its mouth.
The "non-existent" mountain lions are making their presence felt, too.
Unfortunately for the wildlife people, they are being indiscreet and actually being seen and photographed.
People from "up the mountain" tell me the game people have told them: a) there are no mountain lions in the state, 2)they better not get caught shooting one because they will go to jail, and 3) if they get caught trying to hide a radio collar that might be on one that gets shot, they'll be in bigger trouble.
But there aren't any in the state, so there should be no problem...right?
Well, the real question is whether the bear scat smells like pepper and has little bells in it.

ReplyDeleteSarge, watch out for those non-existent mountain lions. If they're anything like the real ones we have in our foothills, they bite.
ReplyDeleteSome people I know have watched a cow being stalked by one of these "phantom" beasts and managed to scare it off, and their dog (Australian shepherd) came home with some very suspect mauling marks on its sides and back.
ReplyDeleteThe movie, "Unstoppable", was in part filmed in a town not far from here (our band is, in fact, playing there tomorrow night) called Tyrone.
A circus train got away on the mountain and crashed, and a tiger managed to run loose for a while causing a lot of upset.
It attacked a cow, and a farmer shot it. Used a shotgun, I'm told.
It's skull is displayed at the sportsman's club where I used to go shooting.
Bears! Panthers! Wonderful in the extreme!
ReplyDeleteI wish we still had panthers. At least I guess I do. I've no idea how the things could make a living as my immediate area is now deep forest since no-one keeps cattle or work animals anymore (for city folk that means a scarcity of open field and pasture and so a scarcity of quail, grouse, rabbits, and such).
Funny. I've been thinking about Sarge for the past couple of days and was considering putting in a little note to ask after his well being this summer. Good to hear from you, Sarge.

Nah, those are pass-throughs. They wipe with nice soft facial quality bunny rabbits.
