The Commencement Address That Won't Be Given

By: Robert Reich

May 18, 2012 - Members of the Class of 2012,

As a former secretary of labor and current professor, I feel I owe it to you to tell you the truth about the pieces of parchment you're picking up today.

You're f*cked.
...

You see, a college education isn't just a private investment. It's also a public good. This nation can't be competitive globally, nor can we have a vibrant and responsible democracy, without a large number of well-educated people.

So it's not just you who are burdened by these trends. If they continue, we're all f*cked.

Vote Repug and ensure it!

There was some pompous little twit from the American Enterprise Institute on NPR this morning, trying to make a "moral case" for unrestrained free enterprise. Everything he said was just a stale rehash of Reaganomics, libertarian hogwash, and Paul Ryan. And never mind that the "morality" of "unrestrained free enterprise" was proven to be bullshit in the Gilded Age, in 1929, and again in 2008.

'Course, they'll never admit that "free enterprise" is essentially amoral: it's all about making a buck any way you can get away with, period. Or that if "free enterprise" is allowed to go too far, it becomes immoral. Sorry, but history has a liberal bias on that one. There was a good reason for the New Deal regulations....

These people are hopeless. They never learn anything (or maybe refuse to), but they never give up....

The definition of "crazy" or maybe "ideologically blind and deluded" is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. Actually, greed is a pretty successful M.O., money-wise and the Repug machine is set up that way.
