I'm sorry ...

We tried. Joe Wilson and I, and Steny Hoyer came by, and we all tried to unseat Peter King in '06 by supporting and campaigning for Dave Mejias but NY-03 is the reddest district in the state. Our failure, and the lack of a credible contender in '08 (I tried to talk Dave into running again but he's content with his local seat for now), means Peter King is still free to spout his horseshit upon the rest of you.

...

It really is frustrating watching career political hacks like Rep. Peter King get as much media attention as they do. On GMA, he reiterated his attacks on President Obama over the failed attempt by the Christmas bomber. His solution of course is for the President to just say terror, terror, terror all day long.

...

I have an idea. Whenever a pundit asks about Peter King to anyone from the left, we use just one word to describe him. Asshole, Asshole, asshole.

...

He's a boil on the ass of New York State.

Update:

And I never thought I'd say the words "I'm voting for Kirsten Gillibrand this November":

Just as Senator Kirsten Gillibrand thought she could breathe a little easier following news that GOP Rep. Peter King is "leaning against" seeking her senate seat in 2010, reports name Harold Ford Jr. as a possible challenger in a Democratic primary.

...

But I will be.

Islanders ...

As most of the regulars here know, I'm a proud Long Islander. There are a lot of great things about this place. The ethnic diversity (the original Melting Pot), the hundreds of miles of world-class beaches, and a 40 minute drive (not at rush hour, however) to Times Square and all the culture of New York City. Not to mention a buncha great bloggers. Heh ...

That said, we have a boil on our collective ass and its name is Peter King. In '06, as most of you know, I did my damnedest to unseat him, backing the best candidate we've had to date, Dave Mejias. No such luck and the bastid is still there, presumably for life (last year's challenger was weak and financially overpowered by King).

King is an absolute moron, a conservative who toes the party line without wavering, and says shit that constantly embarrasses us. His latest verbal diarrhea is most distasteful and has no basis in fact.

As he heads upstate tonight to gauge support for a U.S. Senate run, Rep. Peter King said Sunday he has no plans to tone down his comments about Muslims and their cooperation with law enforcement -- a long-simmering issue that flared up again over the weekend.

...

In response to a Department of Homeland Security report about domestic right-wing extremism, King (R-Seaford) told MSNBC Friday that the department "has never put out a report talking about look out for mosques. Look out for Islamic terrorists in our country. Look out for the fact that very few Muslims come forward to cooperate with the police."

...

He's also made statements regarding the Nassau Country Police and FBI infiltration of our local mosques and intimated law enforcement has them under constant surveillance - something both agencies strongly deny.

...

The Seaford congressman, who is the ranking Republican member of the Homeland Security Committee, also said that "right now there are a number of mosques under surveillance by law enforcement agencies" on Long Island. He would not state which mosques or which law enforcement agencies, but said the surveillance has been going on for four or five years.

...

In the first place, Long Island's Islamic community is one of the most "well-behaved" demographics of any of the dozens inhabiting this big sandbar. I can't remember the last time (I've lived here for 38 years of my 47 year life) any trouble has been traced to our Islamic neighbors, yet Peter King makes a point of singling them out whenever he can. He creates an environment of fear for Nassau County's Muslims that should not be tolerated. The key is the term "Nassau County", the reddest in the NY Metro (NY, NJ, CT, PA) area and King's 'jihad' against the Muslim community plays with the base, mostly retirees who haven't made it to Florida or North Carolina.

One can only hope King runs for the Senate seat Kirsten Gillibrand has to defend next year, and losees. Prayers might be answered if a strong Dem can challenge his House seat during that time and our terminal boil can be lanced once and for all.

Most Long Islanders are proud of our racial, ethnic, and religious diversity and the great majority of us live together in peace and cooperation. Idiots like Peter King are dinosaurs and will soon be extinct. Not soon enough for me but the writing is on the wall.

Dave

As you know, last year we supported Long Island Legislator Dave Mejias in his bid to unseat Peter King in NY-03 (unsuccessful but the closest challenge King has ever faced). I just sent an email out to Mr. Mejias this morning, asking if he'd be considering another run against King in '08 and pledging our support should he decide to. Personally, I'm gonna bug the shit out of him until he does because he is a good man and we could use his representation on a national level. If you feel as I do, and you live in NY-03, why don't you drop him a line?

Election Aftermath, CA-04

Congratulations to Charlie Brown, even though he lost to Doolittle. Just like Dave Mejias in Fixer's district, Col. Brown was the first serious major opposition to this entrenched Repuglican ever. He gave it a helluva shot and damn near did it.

Kudos as well to Espresso, Charlie's overworked volunteer for the eastern Sierra in Placer and Nevada Counties. She worked her be-boops off. Part of an e-mail she sent out:

As you all most likely know, Charlie did not win, but missed the target by slightly less than 3% District wide. I understand that Nevada County went for Charlie, Placer did not (and as a Placer County resident, let me be the first to say "Why yes, we are inbred idiots! Thanks for asking!")

You did good, kid. It was all them flatlanders from the western slope. We simple hill folk blame everything on them anyway. I live in Nevada County and I'm proud of us.

Just as an aside, Espresso lives about a thousand feet higher in the mountains than I do, and probably considers me a flatlander. Neither one of us trusts anybody below 6000 feet.

After looking at the Secretary of State's election report (courtesy of our long-lost buddy Travis), all our cow counties went for Doolittle, which indicates to me that the farther you live from electricity and indoor plumbing, the more likely you are to vote Republitard. You shit with the goats, you smell like 'em.

It threw a scare into Doolittle, though. From the Sackatomatoes Bee:

Rep. John Doolittle, sounding chastened by a victory Tuesday that was too close for comfort, said Wednesday he will not run for a position in the House Republican leadership next week and will work to remove the legal "cloud" that threatened his re-election.

"The message from the election is that I need to re-evaluate, to be more in touch with my constituents and see how to best meet their needs," he said in an interview with The Bee.

Doolittle also said he will work aggressively to resolve any questions the Justice Department might have about his relationship with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"I'd just like them to know what I know," he said. "That above all else was a real drag on my campaign."

That ball and chain and nine-pound hammer you're gonna get in the pen might be a little drag on yer ass too. Happy landings.

In his concession speech early Wednesday, Brown said his strong showing against Doolittle in the heavily Republican district ushered in a new era of politics.

"No Republican will ever take the 4th District for granted again," he declared.

On other issues, Doolittle said he will lose some effectiveness in promoting construction of an Auburn Dam because he no longer will be among the Republican majority on the House Appropriations Committee.

That, in and of itself, is a victory. Most of the folks in the foothills, and those downstream who know what's goin' on, don't want that dam on the American River. The ones in favor of it are developers and others who have a vested interest in continued growth of our already over-populated state. That's a whole 'nother story.

Try again next time, Charlie. You did fine.

More of your base are belong to us

I served as part of the superb Deval Patrick/Tim Murray ground team. Volunteers from all over Massachusetts were able to participate in a Get Out Our Vote effort that gave Democrats in Massachusetts a real mandate for change. Team Patrick had field organizers who worked with their own communities, with volunteers from union members to students to moms to veterans to little old ladies doing whatever they had time to do and more. On Election Day I stayed until the polls closed, making phone calls and then I went out and knocked on doors, ready to give a ride to the polls then and there if necessary, and I wasn't the only one. I believe grassroots efforts like this played a significant role in the Big Blue Force that pulled our country back from a fascist precipice and I feel safer already.
And thank you Dean for the 50-State Strategy. We didn't win them all but if you face your enemy at every point you're not going to win every single battle. However, all of us, our nation, and the whole planet are winners and we owe plenty to those who didn't triumph this time. Connecticut didn't make Lamont its junior Senator, but Lamont ran a principled, issue-driven campaign that won him great admiration in CT and New England. Like many Democratic candidates who lost, including Dave Mejias and Charlie Brown, Lamont has gained 'name-brand' recognition and put important issues to voters. (I guess we can never underestimate the power of incumbency and Republican gerrymandering.) An example is Jerry McNerney, who beat Pombo in CA-11 in 2006, but remember, he lost decisively in 2004 and stuck with it. We have a bunch of high-quality candidates out there who I have high hopes for in 2008. Ohio barely sent mean Jean back to the House but we are also sending Fighting Dem, Netroots candidate Jim Webb to the Senate. I first heard of him via blogs. Not on national or local news and not in the national or local papers but right here on the internet. Blogs helped set the stage and the voters of VA brought it home. (I guess Allen must be thinking in that allenesque way, what a difference a macaca makes.) I contributed to Webb's campaign through ActBlue. I also contributed to Tester, Brown, Mejias, Paccione, Lamont... (And considering that I was laid off a bit over a week ago I have to say that I am kinda glad the midterms are over. Now I can take my finger off the button before my wallet explodes and concentrate on getting a job.) In short this was a great win for the Dems, particularly in the face of the lies, distortions, and attacks of the GOP, not to mention an alternate brainless media that has not been doing its job. Who would have thought, two years ago, that we would see the fall of the Republican majority come so soon? (Alternate Brain, Jo Fish and Main and Central kept me from utter despair.) The Dems have taken back Congress and I think this shows that a solid majority of rational people can prevent a fundamentalist minority from hijacking American politics, and that is something to celebrate. As Gordon noted yesterday, Ya done good, Americans. You beat the biggest criminal political machine in history by a knockout.

We tried ...

But no cigar. CNN calls NY-03 for Peter King. Fortunately, his ass is gonna be off the Homeland Security Committee. Congratulations to Speaker Pelosi and the rest of the House Dems who unseated Rethugs to take at least one chamber of Congress.

I wish Dave Mejias and his staff the best and congratulate them for giving Peter King the tightest race of his political career. I plan to support Dave in his future political endeavors if he feels the urge to run for national office again.

More tomorrow, I'm tired.

Election Day

If you do nothing else today:

VOTE

We've said all we can by this point; it's up to you the People now. If you're sick and tired of what's gone on over the past 6 years, you have no excuse not to go to the polls today. My wonderful staff and I have given you all the info you need to make an informed decision and now you have the ball. We can't go to the polls and pull the lever for you. Get up and do the right thing.

My day will be pretty crazy. I'm leaving in a couple minutes to take the Mrs. to the airport, yes she voted via absentee ballot, and then I'm off to vote before I go to work. Dave Mejias will be campaigning on Long Island's north shore today and I extended the invitation for them to make an appearance at the shop. I can drum up a crowd in seconds so I'm on a 2 minute warning for that. Tonight, I'll be with the Mejias camp as the election results come in. Don't know about liveblogging, I haven't determined what kind of Internet access I'll have, but I'll have details one way or another.

Remember:

VOTE

I'll see you when I can.

Dave

It could have come sooner in my book, but:

FARMINGDALE - After Republican incumbent Peter King attempted to mislead voters in a recent campaign mailer, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) set the record straight today by making his support of Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias, the Democratic candidate for Congress in New York's Third Congressional district, loud and clear. By using misleading photos and quotes, Peter King is trying to associate himself with popular New York Democrats in a desperate attempt to distance himself from President Bush and the failed policies he rubber stamped.

...

"I whole heartedly support Dave Mejias for Congress in New York's Third Congressional District," said Senator Charles Schumer. "Our country is going in the wrong direction and new leadership in Washington starts with new representation at home on Long Island. Dave Mejias has proven himself an independent voice in the Nassau County Legislature and has always delivered for Long Island. We can reclaim American dream, receive our fair share of Homeland Security funding, and put America back on track with new leadership in Congress."

More Rethug dirty tricks. Would have been nice if Schumer came out a month ago but at least he stepped up when he had to. Put an end to the Rethugs' corruption on Long Island:

While the two candidates disagree over the accuracy of a recent poll that shows them in a dead heat, the race is close enough to encourage Democratic supporters to reach into their pocketbooks. Mr. Mejias has raised more than $650,000, with roughly 75% coming from individuals.

The DCCC has taken note, adding Mr. Mejias to its Red to Blue program, which introduces congressional candidates to Democratic donors across the country. [my em]

Dave

Following up on my post from the Mejias press conference with Ambassador Joe Wilson yesterday. From the Mejias camp via email:

FARMINGDALE - Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson came to Long Island today to campaign with Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias, Democratic candidate for Congress in New York's Third Congressional District. While on Long Island, Wilson and Mejias spoke to members of the press about the failures of Peter King and this Republican-controlled Congress to provide the necessary oversight their positions demand because of blind partisanship. Our country was mislead into a war with no end in sight, because Congressmen like Peter King were too busy vying for power instead of asking the tough questions. Now that King is Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, he is a reliable rubber stamp for George Bush, and has voted with the President 100% of the time on matters of Iraq.

"Peter King cares more about keeping his job than doing his job," said Mejias. "Our young men and women are fighting and dying in Iraq with no end in sight because Peter King and the Republican controlled Congress rubber stamped Bush's failed policies. King is President Bush's most ardent supporter; he votes lock step with President Bush and refuses to recognize the severity of the situation in Iraq. King recently said that downtown Baghdad is as safe as downtown Iraq, and stood by his statement that 95 percent of Iraq is secure and safe."

Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson gained national attention in July 2003 when he penned an opinion-editorial article in the New York Times questioning President Bush's rationale for going to war in Iraq. Shortly thereafter, Bush administration officials disclosed to the press that his wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA officer who held non-official cover status. Wilson has been campaigning across America for various Congressional candidates and came to Long Island to lend support to Dave Mejias, who he calls the personification of the American success story.

"This is the most important election of my life, it is about restoring accountability in American Government and this can only be done with a Democratic majority in Congress," said former Ambassador Joseph Wilson. "The Republicans have marched lock step in every way behind George Bush and his White House minions sacrificing the Constitution of the United States on the altar of misplaced partisan loyalty."

At today's press conference Dave Mejias and Ambassador Wilson were joined by U.S. veterans Tom Cleere, Richard Wood, George Olenick, and Al Britvan. Tom Cleere, a former United States Army Captain and Iraq war veteran spoke at the event. "I served in Iraq and I can attest that Downtown Baghdad is not as safe as Downtown Manhattan, Peter King is out of touch with the realities in the Middle East. I have known Dave Mejias for many years, I am confident that Dave will better represent us in Congress because he knows about honor, commitment and the need to ask questions; all qualities that I learned about during my service in the Army."

While introducing Ambassador Wilson, Dave Mejias commended Wilson for his great service and unwavering dedication to our Country. "I greatly admire Joe Wilson's courage and determination," said Mejias. "It is no wonder he chose Dante Alighieri's quote 'The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality' from The Divine Comedy as the epigraph in his book The Politics of Truth." Dave Mejias and Joe Wilson

Just wow. Joe Wilson is amazing. The detail he keeps in his head, names, dates, places, and he spoke off the cuff for about 20 minutes. He and the candidate took turns slamming Peter King and George Bush and I had to stop myself from just yelling out 'you tell 'em, boys'. Ambassador Wilson spoke of Karl Rove and Scooter Libby as "toadies, lickspittles, and traitors".

We spoke for a few minutes afterward about his problems with the administration and the hassle they've had since his wife's outing at the hands of BoobBob Novak. He related that Peter King said it was "a good thing" Valerie Plame was outed. Their civil suit against the administration is moving forward; I hope they put the screws to 'em. He told me his problems were nothing compared to what our troops face in Iraq. I also wished him and his family well from the staff here at the Brain and he said he'd check us out.

Happily, Dave didn't drag my ass over to say anything this time (My prepared remarks posted here if you're interested.) and after the press conference, the candidate and the ambassador waded into the crowd outside Mejias Headquarters.

And a little 'inside baseball': I've been bugging Mr. Mejias about his wearing the same tie to every appearance. It's a beautiful red, white, and blue striped affair and he loves it. The first thing he says to me when I walk into the office today is, "look, Rich, I got a new tie!"

Dave

First. Now I can tell you that Ambassador Joe Wilson will be campaigning with Dave Mejias tomorrow. I'll be attending a press conference with them in the afternoon in Farmingdale and of course I'll have details.

Next, Newsday gave their endorsement to Dave this morning. Listen to me: Two papers (NYT endorsement here) who share the highest circulation in the NY Metro Area endorsed Dave Mejias over a fourteen year incumbent. Got that?

...

Mejias supports a more pragmatic policy that would include tougher border security and employer sanctions, a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country. Mejias is the son of Hispanic immigrants. He overcame economic hardship to become a lawyer and a Nassau County legislator. He's been effective, for instance, by passing a tough county registration-and-notification law for sex offenders and a domestic worker bill of rights.

Mejias promises pragmatic solutions to the nation's problems, a refreshing change. Newsday endorses Mejias.

We're on the downhill run, ladies and germs. IT'S NOVEMBER.

Dead Heat!

From the Mejias campaign via email:

"We are a week out from Election Day and this race is a statistical dead heat," said Mejias. "It can't be more clear, Peter King and the Republican controlled Congress have taken our country in the wrong direction and the people of New York's Third District want change. This race has picked up an incredible amount of momentum and I am heading into Election Day with a great amount of wind at my back."

The highlights of a Constituent Dynamics poll taken last week:

Dave Mejias leads in Suffolk County, Mejias 49% King 45%

Dave Mejias leads among Independent voters, Mejias 48% King 43%

President Bush received a 35% approval rating

Even my boss Harry, who's a staunch, life-long Republican, listened to Dave the other night and was impressed enough where he'll vote for Mejias instead of just sitting out the election. Harry's words: "I can see why you like this guy. He's got great ideas. Peter King's a fucking asshole." That's about the greatest endorsement Harry has ever given to anything. If Dave can sway the stubborn old man, he has a good chance of winning.

Dave for America

Do you live in NY-03? You do? Good, you'd better have your ass at the polls next Tuesday or I'll come get ya. We're a week out and I'm gonna be harping on this until we put it to bed.

Update

Stolen fully and completely from PKW:

King says his internal polling has him up 23 points and that has been consistant for 7 months.
So what candidate up 23 points in a district gerrymandered for republicans drops half a million dollars on advertising the last two weeks of the campaign?
A candidate who is not confident that the 23 points is a real number.

Dave

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer campaigning with Dave Mejias this weekend.

It's nice to see the Dem leadership making the campaign rounds with the candidate:

FARMINGDALE - Yesterday Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland visited New York's Third Congressional District in a show of support for Nassau County Legislator Dave Mejias, Democratic Candidate for Congress. During the visit, Hoyer and Mejias talked about the failures of Peter King and this Republican-controlled Congress to protect New York because of their refusal to provide necessary oversight. Because of these failures New York's homeland security funding was cut this year by 40%, Homeland Security contractors are unpunished when significant waste, abuse and mismanagement occurs, and the 9/11 Commission recommendations have not been fully implemented...

"This Republican-led 'cover-up Congress' has been complacent and complicit in rubber-stamping virtually everything the Bush Administration has asked for," said Hoyer. "We believe Dave Mejias is going to win. Americans want a change. Incumbents like Peter King offer only the status quo while Democratic challengers like Dave Mejias provide an opportunity to take our country in a new direction." [my ems]

...

You're damn right Dave is gonna win. Would have been nice to see the big shots from the party on Long Island a couple months ago but better late than never.

Mejias interview

I was gonna post this here but YouTube was acting stupid this morning. Peter King Watch has Dave's interview on Up Close with Diana Williams from our local ABC affiliate yesterday. Dave slams Peter King's poicies on just about everything, especially Homeland Security and illegal immigration, and puts forth his own solutions. If you haven't heard Dave Mejias speak, you owe it to yourself to watch this (about 10 mins.), especially if you're a Long Islander living in NY-03.

Update:

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer has come out squarely behind Dave.

...

Hoyer, D-Md., is touting Democratic candidates around the country as part of his party's effort to gain 15 seats or more to win control of the House of Representatives. Election Day is Nov. 7.

In going after King, Hoyer and Mejias cited a Bush administration decision earlier this year that provoked widespread outrage among New Yorkers of all political stripes: a 40 percent cut in the amount of federal anti-terror grants to New York City and Washington, the two cities targeted in the Sept. 11 attacks.

...

And Peter King didn't say a word. Do you know who got our anti-terror funding restored? Yep, Hillary Clinton. Now tell me how the Republicans are "keepin' us safe".

And just a note to vets: Listen when Dave says, and I'm paraphrasing, "I'm not a military man, but I know enough to let the military fight the war". Dave wants us out of Iraq and he'll look out for our troops. He's listened to me, and other vets, when we spoke to him of the horrible funding cuts at the VA and for brain injury research, and he's pledged to help. Peter King talks a line, but he only cares about vets when it comes to gathering them around him for a photo op. Typical Republican coward like Chimpy McFlightsuit. Dave Mejias supports the troops, he doesn't give 'em lip service, and he knows the mission won't be accomplished until every last one of them is out of "Mess o' Potamia". (Credit - Jo Fish)

You make enemies ...

Peter King Watch, J's wonderful blog documenting the follies, ineptitude, and corruption of Long Island's last surviving Republican rep, has ruffled some feathers. Some Kool-Aid drinking genius has created Mejias Watch [No link, you can get there via PKW. We don't link to Rethug idiots here at the Brain, in case you don't know. It's the only rule I have. ~ F]. I'll quote the twit though, in reference to the Newsday article I mentioned yesterday:

... Whether this was committed by the GOP or by Mejias's own people to stir up more negative publicity against the Congressman, it's revolting and undermines democracy...

I agree with him that "it's revolting and undermines democracy". Let me say, with the utmost clarity and for the record, that I have met and spoken with Dave Mejias and I know he would not use his mother in such a way. I wouldn't put my integrity, credibility, and reputation on the line for him as I have if I thought he were capable of it. Period.

King-sized scandal

Seems Peter King's son is a lobbyist. Seems he made money thanks to his daddy's influence. Seems daddy lied about it.

Political Cortex

Peter King Watch (here and here)

From the Mejias campaign via email:

...

An article in yesterday's Newsday ("King's son works for defense lobbying firm"), details that Sean King is a Vice President at Park Strategies, and that "Park Strategies has lucrative contracts with many big businesses to lobby on defense and homeland security spending." The article quotes Peter King as saying "[Sean King] has no clients that deal with my office." NOT TRUE. This video shows Sean King in Taiwan touting his clients, Lockheed Martin and L-3 Communications, both firms that receive Homeland Security contracts.

Update:

Peter King's henchmen have been fucking with Dave's mom:

"Vandals took a large sign for congressional candidate David Mejias from his mother's lawn in Farmingdale Wednesday night and then plastered Elsa Mejias' car with bumper stickers for incumbent Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), according to Nassau County police. Mejias, a Nassau County legislator from North Massapequa, said, "I've been in some pretty brutal campaigns but this is ridiculous."

Lowlife bastids.

Dave

Good news from Swing State Project:

Perhaps sensing a once in a generation opportunity to paint as many as seven Republican districts in New York blue this cycle, the DCCC has just added Dave Mejias* (NY-03), John Hall (NY-19), Jack Davis (NY-26), and Eric Massa (NY-29) to the Red to Blue program (see Jesse Lee's posts here and here). With the election a week and a half away, this would've been more significant had it been announced a few weeks ago, but hopefully it should lend these four guys an extra surge against their embattled opponents...

It's about time. I also have a bone to pick with Bill Clinton for this:

...

While the race between veteran Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) and Nassau Legis. Dave Mejias (D-North Massapequa) is Long Island's marquee congressional battle, Clinton never mentioned Mejias, who was at the event.

...

Know why?

...

While King, who was one of a handful of Republicans to vote against some of the articles of impeachment against the former president, was spared a verbal lashing, Clinton said Republican dominance in Washington has been bad for the nation.

...

You know what, Bill? You can suck my hairy white ass. A lot of shit has changed in 10 years. You know the mess the Rethugs have made of this nation and you decide, at this critical time, to repay a political debt? You've been hanging around with Poppy Bush too long. Remember, if it weren't for your 'indescretion', Al Gore would be the President now. We've stood by you, and your wife, through it all; it's time to remember who brung ya.

Wake the fuck up and give Dave your full endorsement. Better yet, do it in the lot of my shop, in front of regular Long Islanders, in Dave's district. I'll eat a day's profit and give you my floor. You owe us this, goddammit.
