American Hero Of The Day

Andrew Sullivan

Mike Bertha sets the scene:

A 54-year-old Tacoma man has been arrested for allegedly driving his car into a Pacific Gas & Electric worker in Fresno, trapping the man between two vehicles. According to a witness, Jett Simmons claimed to be the reincarnation of Jesus Christ before making racially charged threats and ramming his car into the PG&E worker. The witness—a hitchhiker “from Dogtown” by way of West Virginia named Kai (that it—just Kai)—says that after Simmons rammed the man, he got out of the car and tried to smother a bystander with a bear hug. That’s when Kai sprung into action and hit the 6’4″, 290-pound Simmons on the head with a hatchet. Once, twice, thrice. In the aftermath of the ordeal, the victim asked not to be identified and said that he only hopes his assailant gets the help he needs.

Kai, meanwhile, gave the greatest interview in the history of television news. Peep the full, NSFW version [above].(Below - G)

Update from a reader:

The Dude did not abide on that one. Fucking awesome.
Fucking awesome indeed. NSFW indeed! Heh.

That kid rules. If I may quote Sgt. Hartman, he's "silly and he's ignorant, but he's got guts and guts is enough."
Thanks for posting this!

Nice kid. Probably a throwaway, given his last couple of sentences. I've known a few people like Kai in my time. Hopefully he washes ashore somewhere. I've seen it happen, including one kid who found an unlikely love of the sea and is now the happiest person I've ever known, why, people *pay* him to sail their boats! I've also seen it not happen. The latter is usually an early death :(. Sigh.

At that age, he's not homeless in the lives-under-a-bridge negative kind of way. More footloose and fancy free. I've got a hunch he'll be OK.

A decent guy. People hear the way he talks and see the hair and the clothes and the carefree lifestyle (not really carefree because there are a lot of cares and stresses living like that) and think he's a weirdo and run away. I've met more than a couple of people like him in California, only all the ones I met were in their forties and had gotten through their carefree youth, found a way forward, and were doing fine. One was teaching school, one laying tile, one was a carpenter. Every one a decent guy. If I ever run into Kai, I'll lend him a hand if he needs one, and I would think so would anyone who saw that video.

Gordo, the kid apparently was in a bunch of foster homes in Canada then was kicked out at age 18 and started drifting. Thus why he's cagey about his name and age and where he's from, he's pretty clearly Canadian (thus the "aboot" rather than "about"), but claims to be from West Virginia.

So no, he's not footloose and fancy free as such. He just really has no place to be.

DBK, I met a kid like him when I was pretty much a kid myself. Fifteen years later I met him again. He'd washed ashore at a boatyard in Oregon, talked his way into a job cleaning the docks, managed to ingratiate himself to the wealthy yacht owners who ran the place by being helpful and reliable, and nowadays gets paid to maintain and captain their boats. Who knew that a redneck kid from the red clay hills of northern Mississippi would discover a love of the water? He was pretty unhappy the first time I met him, he'd been abused as a kid and had some clear issues that he was working out on the road. Fifteen years later, he had a wife and kids, and was being paid to sail boats, something he'd do for free, and was pretty much the happiest person I've ever met.

So yeah, it can happen. Or dead bodies can be found under bridges. When that happens, it's always chalked up as "natural causes", as if being a throwaway kid and dying of exposure is just as natural as dying of old age.
